Lee Sung-Eun

Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to compare effects of social support on dental service utilization between urban and rural older adults.

Methods : This study used data from the third wave survey of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing and the sample consisted of 4,003 elderly people. This study used logistic regression model to identify effects of social support on dental service utilization, controlling for other variables.

Results : Results show that oral health condition was associated with dental service utilization of both urban and rural elderly. Satisfaction with financial status was associated with dental service utilization of the rural elderly only. On the other hand, age and education level were associated with dental service utilization of the urban elderly only. In terms of social support, children living close by and the level of social participation increased the probability of dental service utilization among the urban elderly.

Conclusion : These results indicate that characteristics of elderly based on the region should be considered in designing and implementing services for appropriate dental service utilization among the older adults.
